Microsoft Outlook Message Could Not Be Saved

Today I ran into a frustrating issue with Outlook 2013 where a user received an error saying 'The operation cannot be performed because the message has changed.' or at times 'The operation failed. The messaging interfaces have returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook'. The errors would come up when she tried to send a message AFTER when Outlook was set to save a draft (in this case, 3 minutes). When this happened, she couldn't send the message and would have to copy and paste the contents into a new composed mail in order to send it. This was in a terminal server environment and she was using an Exchange account that's hosted on Office 365. While researching the issue online, I saw that users using POP3 and IMAP accounts were experiencing the same thing without a long-term resolution. The short-term resolution was to disable drafts completely but that was not acceptable here.

In Outlook 2010 or later versions: Select File, and then Options. In the Outlook Options dialog, select Mail. Under the Save messages section, enable the Save copies of messages in the Sent Items folder option. Enter 300000 under the Value data. Next, use the Base of Hexadecimal by default. Choose OK button. On File menu, select Exit option to close the Registry Editor. If these two registry values that were indicated earlier to 0x300000 does not resolve Outlook issue, then, the users must increase the value up to 0x800000.

I tried recreating her Outlook profile, ran Outlook in safe mode (no addons), and extended the autosave for drafts from 3 minutes to no avail. Finally, I discovered the magic solution.

Step 1: Disable 'When a reply modifies a message, don't move the original.'

Go to Options > Mail > Conversation Clean Up > and uncheck 'When a reply modifies a message, don't move the original.'

That's it! This has been tested and has resolved the issue here. W00t!

    I created an IMAP folder under my Gmail account in Outlook 2016 and I was trying to move a replied message to this folder and I was running into the same error message: 'Cannot move the items. The operation cannot be performed because the message has changed. I went and did the fix as stated above and unchecked the box 'when a reply modifies a message, don't move the original' but this fix did not fix my problem. I'm still receiving the same error message. Anyone else have any ideas?

    I unchecked Don't Move Unread Messages and that worked, but just did a few tonight.

    Tim it didn't work for me at first either. Had to shutdown and restart outlook and then it worked perfectly. Hope that helps

    We fixed this problem in Outlook 2016 by removing the Outlook add-in included with
    the installation of Adobe Acrobat DC ' Adobe Send & Track for Microsoft Outlook – Acrobat'. In Programs & Features, select Adobe Acrobat, and Change, then remove the Outlook portion of the installation (or you can user-by-user disable the above add-in in Outlook).

    Unchecking the last box in Conversation Clean-Up, as well as saving a copy of the email with pdf attachment worked for users up until today. Norcofan's solution regarding disabling the Adobe Send & Track add-in was the final solution for us.

    However, I needed to disable through Outlook > Options > Add-Ins > Manage COM Add-Ins > Uncheck Adobe Send & Track for Outlook.

    This has been driving me nuts!! This ' Go to Options > Mail > Conversation Clean Up > and uncheck 'When a reply modifies a message, don't move the original.' would fix it but only temporarily.

    I've just disabled the Adobe Send & Track Add-in. I am hoping this is the permanent solution. I will post back.

    I have another fix to this. I too did not have the adobe add-in installed and it was driving me nuts. I noticed that it only happens when I send Excel documents. So after much frustration, I ended up going to File Explorer to locate the document/spreadsheet, then right-clicked on the file and clicked 'Send to' then hit mail recipient. It will bring up the subject line as the name of the document, so if you're trying to reply to a prior e-mail, I would copy and paste the string/thread into Word to save it to paste into the new e-mail along with whatever subject line you had previously. Then add your recipients, and send the e-mail. It will work every time. If you do this from going into Excel or the application for the attachment that you are sending, it won't always work. Hopefully this works for you! I don't know if people are having issues with anything other than when they send an attachment, but it's the only time that message pops up for me.

    Hi Alan70

    I have tried everything else mentioned on the web.
    Your reg edit has helped to delete any new junk mail that arrives, but not the emails that were in the folder prior to the reg edit.

    I Experienced this issue when moving messages from a Gmail based account in Outlook.

    I disabled Adobe Send & Track for Outlook and fixed the issue.

I have a couple of rules configured already and today I wanted to add another one but when saving the rule I get the error that I don’t have enough space for that. I just cleaned up my mailbox and I have enough space left in my mailbox.

How can I make Outlook to save this rule?

The full error reads:

One or more rules could not be uploaded to Exchange server and have been deactivated. This could be because some of the parameters are not supported or there is insufficient space to store all your rules.

The limitation of saving rules has nothing to do with the size available in your mailbox but is actually an Exchange limitation. Exchange has a limitation of only having up to 32KB of rules active at a time (deactivated rules don’t count for the limit).

Unfortunately, there is no way to see how many space you still have available for saving rules but on average you should be able to have up to about 40 rules. When you have more complex rules, the amount of rules that you can have active at a time will reduce significantly.

Exchange 2007, Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013 have the ability to go beyond this 32KB limit. By default, the limit is set to 64KB but your administrator can configure it to be up to 256KB. This works for all supported versions of Outlook as well; not just Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010 or Outlook 2013!

Your administrator can change this via the SetMailbox -RulesQuota PowerShell command.

Reduce the individual rule sizes

Aside from getting your rules quota increased, you can also reduce the size of your rules by using shorter names for your rules.

Also, when you have a lot of rules based on contacts, shorten their “Display as” field for those contact items. This can save you a lot of characters.
For instance, the “Display as” field for my contact would be:
Robert Sparnaaij (feedback@msoutlook.info)

You can shorten this to just “Robert Sparnaaij” or “Robert MSO”. This would only take up 16 or 10 characters then instead of 42.

Instead of creating more rules, also consider using a combination of Custom Views, Search Folders, Categories and Conditional Formatting to sort your mail and become more productive.
